White marble statue of a female figure of heroic size. Photographer: Thompson, Stephen
- Scope & Content:
-
Genre: Fine Arts, Photography of
Front view of the large marble statue of a female figure, with a veil falling over the back of the head, apparently photographed in a storage area of the museum, with other pieces on shelves in the background: '… A laurel wreath sculptured in relief out of the marble encircles her head. The nose and mouth of this figure are nearly destroyed, the right arm from above, and the left arm from below the elbow are wanting; also the anterior half of the left foot. This figure has been thought to represent Livia, the wife of Augustus, but in the present mutilated condition of the nose and mouth, the resemblance to that Empress is not sufficiently strong to make the attribution certain. The features are those of an aged person. This fact and the veiled head suggest the notion that a priestess is represented by this figure, which may be compared with the female figure from Cnidus, in the British Museum, also thought to be a priestess. The statue here described is probably not later than the Augustan age, and seems the work of a Greek sculptor. The drapery is richly composed and elaborately wrought. In the arrangement of the folds of the peplos this figure is curiously like the female figure from the Mausoleum, called by some Artemisia. It was found at Atripalda in Italy. Height, 6 ft. 10 in.'
