Fictile ware drinking cup. Photographer: Thompson, Stephen
- Scope & Content:
-
Genre: Fine Arts, Photography of
Side view of a pottery drinking cup, modelled in the form of a sphinx: '…The body of the Sphinx is painted in opaque white ornamented with gilding. The hair of the Sphinx is painted in vermillion. On the cup are painted, in red on a black ground, a Triton, a Victory, and two female figures; and on the base, a Satyr and a Nymph. Both in the modelling of the Sphinx and in the drawing of the figures are slight traces of archaicism. When we considere the size of this rhyton, the vigorous invention shown in its design, the refinement of the execution and its wonderful condition, it may fairly rank among the finest examples of this class of fictile art which have as yet been discovered. It was found in a tomb at Capua, and may be referred with probability to a period not later than the time of Alexander the Great. Height, 11 6/8 in.'
