Circular image. Group portrait of four seated men: 'Lingaith Banias, so called from their having taken a vow to wear the ling of Mahadeo always round their necks. The ling is usually enclosed in a silver case, which may be noticed in the illustration ... If by any accident the ling is lost, or stolen, they cannot eat, or drink, until another is procured and consecrated ... Group No. 1 consists entirely of Lingaith Banias ... Their chief occupation is selling otta, dhal, ghee, sugar, grain, rice, etc. Their dress consists of a puggri, either white, or red, a dhooti and ungarka. The only idol group No. 1 recognize, or worship, is that of Mahadeo...' For another copy, see Photo 993(5).
