Bhatias [Bombay]. Photographer: Johnson, William
- Scope & Content:
-
Genre: Ethnographical Photography
Group of four men posed against bales of cotton, and with a photomontaged background of Bombay houses. 'The Bhatias (or Bhatyas) are originally from the country of Bhatiner, between Sindh and Rajputana...Multitudes of them are now in Bombay, in which they form a very important portion of its diversified native community, being greatly distinguished for their industry and enterprise. Many of them, too, are found as mercantile agents in the seaports of the Red Sea and the Persian Gulf, and even of the coasts of Africa...They wear the tunic, zone, and pendant front-cloth common among the Hindus; but they are at once cognizable by their high and pointed turbans of printed cotton, with bright colours, which, contrasted with the head-dresses of many other classes of natives, gives them rather an imposing appearance...'
Subjects = Bhatias (caste); ethnic groups; Johnson, 'The oriental races and tribes...' (vol 1, 1863); photomontage
