[Horses with syces, Nagpur.] Photographer: Blees and Company, John
- Scope & Content:
-
Genre: Portrait Photography (generic types)
Oval image. Portrait of three horses, each with a syce or groom holding the bridle of one of the animals, inserted to illustrate Blees' remarks on photographing the animals: 'There are numerous ways to take the photo successfully, a few of which will here be enumerated. Keeping a crust of bread close to the horse's mouth, just before exposure, often succeeds. To make a noise from a hidden place, but from a direction you wish the horse to turn its head to, is another way of accomplishing your aim. To bring up suddenly another horse, always just before exposure and from the right direction, often brings things to a happy issue, and was the means employed by which the accompanying photograph was successfully taken at the first trial ... The horses belong or did belong to Major Bloomfield, at Nagpur. Stereoscopic camera and lenses by Busch, Thomas' collodion 5 days mixed, faintly acid silver-bath strength 32 grains to the ounce. Developer No. 1, soda fixing bath. Exposure one second. The picture was taken in August 1876, at Nagpur, at 7 o'clock in the morning' (pp. 104-5).
