[Portrait of two dogs, Mhow.] Photographer: Blees and Company, John
- Scope & Content:
-
Genre: Portrait Photography (generic types)
Oval image. Studio portrait of two dogs, inserted in Blees' work to illustrate his remarks on animal photography: 'Dogs in India should be taken as early in the morning as possible, the weather then being so much cooler. Dogs seem to perspire through the tongue, and when ever so little heated, constantly expose that useful member ... When ready for exposure, just see that the dogs are in proper position. Don't touch them yourself, but let the keeper do so. Now bend your head down towards the lens, and without looking at the animals imitate suddenly two or three short barks. The dogs are sure to look at you and be on the alert. Expose at once and you will have a good picture. The accompanying picture of dogs, belonging to Colonel Little, was a success at the first trial at Mhow in March 1877, at 9 o'clock in the morning. The full opening at 2B lens, exposure one second. Collodion, Thomas's and Mawson's mixed in equal proportion, five days old, silver-bath almost neutral, 32 grains to the ounce. Developer No. 1, soda fixing bath' (pp. 105-6).
