Damascus. Part of the 'Straight' Street in the Christian Quarter. Photographer: Bedford, Francis
- Scope & Content:
-
Genre: Urban Topographical Photography
General view looking along the street: 'The photograph shows us a portion of the Straight Street, of Christian interest as the temporary abode of the apostle of the Gentiles when first called to his great work and office. A narrow lane running between the Christian and the Jews' quarters, through a labyrinth of buildings, occupies part of the broad colonnade which consituted the the ancient 'street that is called Straight,' the Via recta of the Romans; once a mile long and a hundred feet broad ... It then consisted of a wide thoroughfare having a footway on each side separated from the roadway in the centre by colonnades, the remains of whose columns are even now to be met with buried underneath the rubbish of its present surface, the bases of some of them still being in their original places. At theastern end of these three avenues stands the old Roman gateway...' (p. 76).
