View looking southwards towards the 'migdol' or fortified gateway forming the eastern entrance to the Temple of Rameses II at Medinet Habu: 'In this view...we see the right wing of the entrance considerably dilapidated, and converted, by the early Christian inhabitants of Thebes, into a dwelling house of many chambers, the beams of which were inserted into those rows of holes made in the masonry of the ancient structure...Nearer the spectator are the ruins of houses, of the time of St. Anthony and St. Paul, the first Christian hermits who were natives of Thebaid; and immediately in the foreground are the lower parts of the shafts of the columns of the temple of Tirhakah, with the connecting dwarf wall...To the right is the gate leading to the court of a temple begun by Thothmes I., and carried on by his successors, Thothmes II. and III...'
