Tablets in the quarries at Kardassy. Photographer: Frith, Francis
- Scope & Content:
-
Inscription: Signed 'Frith' in the negative.
Genre: Archaeological Photography
View looking towards a doorway, surrounded by carved figures in niches on the wall: 'a very interesting part of the sandstone quarries of Kardassy where there is a little oratory for the workmen cut in the rock during the Roman period...The inscriptions are in the Greek language, inclosed in a Roman-formed tablet. The busts in the two niches are probably those of Roman consuls who were benefactors to the province and workmen. The figures carved out of rock near the ground are the boyish attempts of the workmen to imitate the Egyptian sculpture. Probably Greek and Roman malefactors were among the workmen, and in consequence we have the Greek writing and Roman architecture.'
Stereoscopic pair.
