The small rock temple at Abou Simbel. Colossal figure of the queen. Photographer: Frith, Francis
- Scope & Content:
-
Inscription: Signed 'Frith' in the negative.
Genre: Archaeological Photography
View from below, looking upwards along the length of the one of the sculptured figures on the façade of the rock-cut temple of Nefertari and Hathor at Abu Simbel. Mentioned here, and also in the introduction to the book, is the difficulty encountered by all the early photographers of the Abu Simbel monuments in getting sufficiently distant from the monument to secure an undistorted view: 'Notwithstanding the necessity of turning up the camera to obtain this view, there being so little space between the figure and the precipitous rock, at whose base flows the river, we have the elegant and vigorous forms of the figure belonging to this age well delineated. The lower part of the figure is of course larger than it would be if it had not been necessary to turn up the camera, and make the horizon in the sky.'
Stereoscopic pair.
