Stereoscopic view, facing p. 173, showing the second mate, standing among scientific equipment: 'To chronicle the exact circumstances under which these high results appeared, the photographic camera was employed with effect. Accordingly in Stereograph, No. 7, may be seen, towards one corner of the telescope enclosure, our stout seaman observer, notebook in one hand, and chronometer in the other, counting seconds up to the moment that he is to take the reading of the exposed thermometer, sharp: after that, he will remove part of the tin-foil covered lid from the sheltered instrument, in order to get the temperature of shade' (p. 172).
