Margins of the Duoro, near to the Cachao Valeira. Photographer: Forrester, Joseph James
- Scope & Content:
-
Genre: Landscape Photography
View along the river: 'The margins of the Douro at the 'Cachão' (or the confines of the Port-wine district), where the clay slate formation alternates with the granite. In the winter season the bold rocks in the foreground are covered by flood. And in consequence of the narrowness of the passage immediately above this spot, the river frequently rises twenty to thirty feet in the space of two or three days, inundating and fertilizing the plains of Villariça, Sabor, and Poçinho ... This photograph is one of 220 views originally intended to illustrate the author's survey of the Douro, and to exhibit the bed and margins of that river at all seasons.' Technical note: 'Taken by the calotype process in September, 1855; weather, fine after much rain; exposure two and a half minutes; developed by Dr. Diamond's process. Lens by Ross; focal length twelve inches; diameter two and a half inches; diaphragm five-eighths of an inch.' The credit notes that Forrester was styled Baron de Forrester in Portugal.
