View looking across a broad towards houses silhouetted against the evening sky: 'In 'Evening,' half hidden among the willows we have a group of rustic buildings reflected in the water of the swampy foreground. Everything is subdued and softened in the fading light. Some slender alders spring gracefully from the marshy ground; the mystery of this dreamy corner reminds one of Corot. How beautiful in touch are the dwarf oaks behind the cottage, and the outline of the hedgerow against the sky! What emphasis is given by the dark tone of the quaint old holly, telling softly against the sky, and in the water, where it is so happily reflected!'
