View looking along the bank of a broad towards a cottage in the distance: '...a dike leads away to the chief point of interest — the old, white-walled, thatched cottage of a marshman. Part of the row of alder bushes which fringe the dike has been cut down, and the branches lie waiting to be tied into faggots. The flood-water invades the bank on either side, making a line of interesting irregularity in the foreground. Valuable contrast is given by the sharp, straight, horizontal line of the submerged marsh in the distance. On the left is a bed of reeds, over the top of which peeps another cottage; on the right a graceful little fir-tree springs from a carr of young alders. Though full of exquisite detail, the effect of the whole is broad and simple; the atmosphere gives beautiful quality to the bank of reeds and mass of alders, and sweetly softens the horizon.'
