Rough proof print of tessellated pavement from the Field of Hadji Captan [Bodrum]. Printed without gold. Negatives erased. Photographer: Spackman, Benjamin L.
- Scope & Content:
-
Genre: Archaeological Photography
Close head-on view of a section of the mosaic pavement, now in the British Museum: 'Views of the greater part of these pavements were taken in photography by Corporal Spackman, R.E…The photographs were taken from a moveable stage, on which the lens was so placed as to command a vertical view of the area below. Notes of the colours were afterwards taken by hand. From the impossibility of keeping the lens to the same focus, the views vary in scale; but with the aid of the plans, they could easily be reduced to the same scale by a skilful draughtsman, and a perfect facsimile of the whole thus presented to the eye.' Charles Newton, 'A History of Discoveries at Halicarnassus, Cnidus, and Branchidae' (London, 1862), vol. 2, part 1, p. 310. For a series of partially-coloured views of the mosaics, see Mss. Add. 46890A (63-161) and for a photograph which shows the stage itself, Mss. Add. 46890 (169). See also note at Mss. Add. 46890A (63),
