[Lion sculpture set into wall of Bodrum Castle.] Photographer: Spackman, Benjamin L.
- Scope & Content:
-
Genre: Archaeological Photography
Newton had seen the lion sculptures embedded in the castle walls at Budrum during his first visit in 1855, and it was this discovery that led to the main expedition to excavate the site: 'I had expressed the hope that in the wall of the Castle at Budrum many remains of the Mausoleum might still be found, and that a closer examination of this fortress might lead to the recovery of these fragments…On entering it, I observed, to my surprise, several colossal lions in Parian or Pentelic marble, and in the finest style of sculpture, inserted in the wall in different places...I had no hesitation in at once recognizing these as part of the Mausoleum...' Charles Newton, 'A History of Discoveries at Halicarnassus, Cnidus, and Branchidae' (London, 1862), vol. 2, part 1, pp. 83-84. For a view of this piece on display in the British Museum in the 1870s, see shelfmark 1704.d.10 (41).
