Jabalpoor, group of Thugs. Photographer: Bourne and Shepherd
- Scope & Content:
-
Group of seven thugs seated on a carpet. The print is unnumbered and unsigned, but almost certainly corresponds to no. 128 in the Bourne and Shepherd catalogue, where the location is given as Simla rather than Jabalpur. Jabalpur in fact seems a more likely location for, as Bowring writes (pp. 164-65), it was
well known as the residence of numerous Thugs and their families, who form a village containing 5000 souls. Wonderful stories are told of the deeds of these ferocious men-slayers, who have no compunction for their evil deeds, it being said that if the subject of Thuggee is alluded to in conversation with them, all the latent savageness of their former occupation displays itself in their faces.
The carpet on which they are seated makes visual reference to the Jabalpur School of Industry, where the children of convicted thugs were taught carpet weaving and other carfts.
