Green full-leather bound journal with gilt decoration, measuring 243 x 190 mm, boards loose, inscribed on front endpaper: Mary Cunningham Scott, India 1859. Lady Scott was the wife of Major-General Sir Francis Cunningham Scott (1834-1902), who served with the 42nd Royal Highlanders in India from 1856-68. The volume contains stories and poems copied from various sources (including from Blackwood's Edinburgh Magazine on the Crimean War), newspaper cuttings, watercolours (including a few architectural drawings by Indian artists), crests (personal and regimental) cut from notepaper, and various other ephemera. There are also 49 albumen prints pasted into the book, the majority taken in 1861-62, covering the following subjects: portraits and groups of fellow officers and others, views at Naini Tal (1861), a series of small views of the Taj Mahal (1862) by Dr John Murray, groups of officers of the 42nd Royal Highlanders at Dagshai (1862), miscellaneous British views.
