Thirkell White and Charles Stuart Pennell Collections: Photographs of Burma.
- Scope & Content:
-
Collection of 111 loose prints (a number on card mounts), accompanied by a handwritten list offering identifications of some of the photographs. This document, probably compiled by a Burmese writer, appears to contain a few inaccuracies. The material can be broadly broken down as follows:
Prints 1-6 Portraits of Burmese office holders, including several of the Sawbwa of Yaunghwe, 1880s-1900s.
Prints 7-39 Pages extracted from a photograph album, mainly comprising portraits of official and social events of Sir Herbert and Lady Thirkell White, 1905-10. Among these photographs are a number which more properly belong with the series of Burmese portraits above (specifically prints 15, 18, 19, 29, 39).
Prints 40-50 Miscellaneous portraits, views and snapshots.
Prints 51-65 Portraits of ethnic groups and other scenes in the Shan States, photographed by Sir James George Scott, c. 1907-09. Most of this material is duplicated in Photo 90/9.
Prints 66-98 Miscellaneous portraits, views and snapshots, early 1900s. A number of these prints have page numbers marked on the reverse, possibly indicating their position as reproductions in a published work (so far unidentified).
Process = Various: albumen prints, printing-out papers, etc.
Photographers = Philip Adolphe Klier, Bourne & Shepherd;
