Colonel George Patrick Ranken Collection: Photograph album of Colonel Ranken.

Black half-leather bound album measuring 405x330mm, the volume generally in poor condition with spine missing and boards detached. The album contains 59 mounted prints, plus printed ephemera. There are in addition 15 smaller loose prints of Indian and British scenes and one larger mounted group portrait of British Army officers, photographed by Elliott & Fry of Baker Street, London. Most prints are uncaptioned.
The album records the army, social and family life of Colonel George Patrick Ranken (1859-1924), Indian Army 1879-1911, Commandant, 24th Punjabi Infantry. The majority of prints are military and social groups, mostly uncaptioned and unidentified. Among the subjects covered are a group of Sandhurst cadets of 1878-79 (print 1); Naini Tal after the landslide of 1880 (print 2); military camp in a caravanserai, (?)North-West Frontier (print 3); group of the 63rd Regiment (print 4); School of Musketry group, Murree (print 13); groups of officers of the School of Musketry and the Murree Volunteers who took part in a rifle match at Murree, c. 1885 (prints 14-15); amateur theatrical groups (prints 21-22); military bands of the 24th Punjab Infantry (prints 37-38); tennis party group (print 41, 45); group of officers of the Manchester Regiment, (?)Sialkot (print 44); group at race course, by Frederick Bremner (print 46); group of officers, probably at Murree, by J. Winter, c. 1890 (print 50); memorial plaque to officers of the 24th Punjab Infantry, killed in action between 1889 and 1895 (print 51); military band and bagpipers of the 24th Punjab Infantry, c. 1890 (prints 53 (by W.D. Holmes) and 54); men of the 24th Punjab Infantry embarking on a troopship, panoramic view composed of two joined prints (print 55).
