The Friends of Vellore in the United Kingdom and Ireland is a registered charity with the purpose of supporting the work of the Christian Medical College and Hospital, Vellore. The Christian Medical College and Hospital was founded by Dr Ira S. Scudder, the daughter of a well established American Missionary family in India. She returned to India in 1900 after medical training in the United States to give medical care to Indian women who could not by custom be treated by a male doctor. In 1902 she established the Mary Taber Schell Hospital for Women. The shortage of women doctors was such that by 1918 she set up the Missionary Medical Hospital for Women to train Indian women doctors in a Christian institution. The college was financed and controlled by missionary societies of various denominations in America and Great Britain. In 1938 the college was required by the Indian Government to increase the standards of its qualifications to degree level. In order to upgrade the qualifications offered by the college it was decided to expand the faculty by appointing men also, and in 1947 male students were also admitted, but without reducing the number of women students. In the same year the name of the college was changed to the Christian Medical College, Vellore. In 1968 this was altered to the College and Hospital. The Friends of Vellore Society was founded in 1940 to coordinate the activities of several groups of individuals sympathetic to the college and was administered until 1948 by its own Executive Committee.
The collection consists of the archives accumulated in the United Kingdom by the secretariat of the Friends of Vellore and of its predecessor the British Board, among which is a large collection of photographs compiled for promotional purposes, and including general views of India, scenes of medical and missionary life, staff and patients at the hospital, the hospital and college buildings, portraits of figures associated with the hospital, visits of dignitaries, etc.
