Nawab Asaf al-Daula celebrating the Muharram festival at Lucknow. He is seated at night in the Imambara listening to the maulvi reading from the scriptures. The maulvi sits in the centre on a dais beneath a canopy. The Nawab sits below on a rug smoking a hookah, with his sword and shield lying beside him. He is surrounded by courtiers and attendants. To the right a group of soldiers. In the background Muharram standards. The mosque is lit by candle-light.
Inscribed on back in English: ‘Nuwab Imambara Usfooda’ ....; in ‘nagari’ characters: ‘Luknau imambara asaf ud-daula.’
