Durbar scene showing Wajid ‘Ali Shah (King of Oudh 1847-56) embracing the Governor-General, Lord Hardinge, on his visit to Lucknow in November 1847. British civil and military officers, as well as sepoys, are present, and the picture may depict the presentation of new standards to the Oudh troops by the British on the occasion of the King’s accession.
Water-colour; 19 by 23.5 ins.
Note: Officers on the terrace are wearing the following uniforms (numbers and letters indicated on mount): 2. Officer of Bengal European Fusiliers; 4. Officer of Rifle Company of the 35th Bengal Light Infantry; 5. Regular Bengal Light Cavalry (in blue); 8. Field Officer with gilt scabbard and epaulettes; 9. Grenadier with white feather plume. Figures in foreground: B. Officer of Rifle Company of the 35th Bengal Light Infantry; C. Regular Bengal Light Cavalry; D. Peaked cap may denote a sepoy of mixed blood; E. Native Officer of the 47th Bengal Cavalry who were Lancers from 1840 to 1858.
The standards with fish and crown emblems belong to Oudh.
