Maharaja Nau Nihal Singh (reg. 1839-40)
- Scope & Content:
-
Portrait of Nau Nihal Singh seated feeding a pet bulbul; an attendant stands behind him.
Inscribed in Persian characters: ‘Kunwar Nau Nihal Singh’; in English: ‘Konwur or Prince Nao Nihal Singh killed at the Gateway during a Suttee.’
Note: Nau Nihal Singh (1821-40) was the son of Kharak Singh and superceded his father as Maharaja in October 1839. He was killed at Lahore by a fall of masonry from a gateway when returning from his father’s funeral, 5 November 1840. The Persian inscription suggests that the drawing was made when Nau Nihal Singh was still a prince (i.e. 1838 or early 1839) but the English inscription implies a date of 1840 or later.
