Kharak Singh seated with Chet Singh standing before him.
Inscribed in Persian characters: ‘Maharajah Kharak Singh. Chait Singh’; in English: ‘Maha Raja Kurruk Singh son and Successor of Runjeet Singh. Poisoned. Cheit Singh his attendant murdered in the presence of his master.’
Note: Kharak Singh (1802-40) was the son of Ranjit Singh and succeeded as Maharaja in June 1839. He was deposed by Nau Nihal Singh in October 1839 and died November 1840. Chet Singh was his Chief Minister and was murdered in October 1839. The English inscription must have been made after November 1840.
