A Punjabi post-runner with a satchel of letters hanging from a spear over his shoulder.
By Kapur Singh, an Amritsar artist. 15 October 1866.
Inscribed by Augustus Honner on album page: ‘Kupoor Sing of Umritsar 15/10/66’; on mount: ‘A dak Runner or Postman - where there is no ‘mail cart’. They run’ ‘about six miles - in an hour - & pass on to the next man & so on - they usually carry a short javelin with hawk bells attached to jingle & frighten off tigers - as they often have to pass thro’ dense jungle at night - his hubble bubble is tied to the Dak bag’; on back in Persian characters: ‘Halkarah sarkari dikwalah’ (official post runner).
Water-colour; 5.5 by 7.51 ins, with mount 8.25 by 10.5 ins. Orange mount with green inner border and blue and white rules.
