Large armchair with cabriole front legs ending in dolphin head feet. Padded armrests and rounded back, decorated with the EIC badge. Embroidery in coloured silks and silver gilt thread
- Scope & Content:
-
Armchair, c.1730, with cabriole front legs ending in dolphin head feet. Padded armrests and rounded back, decorated with the E.I.C. badge (a lion rampant holding an imperial crown).
Walnut with crimson velvet upholstery, and embroidery in coloured silks and silver gilt thread.
Made for the Vice-Chairman of the Court of Directors, and later used as the seat of the Under-Secretary of State for India at King Charles Street. Originally upholstered in red velvet, the seat and arms were re-covered in red morocco leather during the India Office period. The seat appears to have been re-covered in velvet in the early 1900s and the arm pads in 1959.
