East India Company cavalry sabre
- Scope & Content:
-
East India Company pattern piece, imitating the Board of Ordnance Pattern 1796 Light Cavalry Sabre. Iron stirrup hilt with leather-covered wooden grips. Knuckle bow engraved ‘CAVALRY SABRE PRESENT PATTERN 1813’. On one langet (flat projection of hilt near base of blade) is engraved ‘NO.3’ (an EIC pattern number c.1803-13) and ‘301’ (an EIC pattern number c.1840s-50s). Sword maker's name ‘OSBORN & GUNBY’ (active c1810-20) stamped on back of blade. This was the main pattern of cavalry sabre used by both Royal Service and Company’s Service cavalry in India c.1800-c.1825, and it was re-introduced in the Bengal Light Cavalry in the 1840s, its very curved slashing blade being preferred to other patterns by the Indian ‘sowars.’
