A youth standing between flowers holding a jewelled bottle and cup
- Scope & Content:
-
Portrait of a youth standing between flowers holding a jewelled bottle and cup; dark green background.
Mughal, c.1635.
149 by 89 mm.
NOTE: A second version of this is in an album in the collection of Her Majesty the Queen, Windsor Castle (A.13, f.42), where it is identified as Sultan Parviz, the eldest son of Jahangir and father of Nadira Banu Begam. However, this idealised portrait does not bear sufficient resemblance to contemporary portraits of Sultan Parviz for the identification to be accepted (cf.’. Jahangir receiving Sultan Parviz,’ from the Minto Album, Victoria and Albert Museum, I.M.9-1925, reproduced in Stchoukine (1929), pl.XXVIII and Stchoukine (1929-30), 215). In view of the fact that the Windsor version is based on this picture, it seems that the misidentification may be based on the association of the album with Sultan Parviz’s daughter.
