Volume IV of the bird drawings from the Wellesley Collection. 19 by 12 inches. 100ff. in watercolour.
Folios 21 and 27 must have been given to Wellesley by Lord Valentia as they bear his Persian seal on the reverse. ‘The Right Honourable Lord bahadur Viscount valentia, 1217’ (i.e. 1802); ff.25, 31, 40, 41, 43, 57 are probably by Chinese painters; f.70v, ‘From Life in Lord Wellesley’s possn. The female is very like the English hen Pheasant only smaller; f.71, ‘from Java’; f.73, ‘From Nepaul’; ff.80 and 87, ‘Found in the Snowy mountains of Surinagur’; f.84, ‘From near Lucknow’. Hardwicke had recently been to Srinagar and Kumaon and these are almost certainly some of his drawings.
