A Sikh sardar, probably Raja Suchet Singh
- Scope & Content:
-
A Sikh sardar, probably Raja Suchet Singh (1801-44), standing facing left and wearing a white dress and turban. He has a black shield on his back and a sword in a crimson scabbard at his side.
By a Lahore or Amritsar artist, Punjab Plains, c.1837.
Inscribed on front in pencil: ‘Costume and attitude of Sikh armed attendant’; in ink partially cut away ‘.. Painting .... in waiting. 18.’
Water-colour with gold; 3.5 by 6.75 ins.
Note: Although Vigne describes this drawing as showing a ‘Sikh armed attendant’, it probably depicts Raja Suchet Singh (compare Add.Or.1387’).’ Suchet Singh was the third of three Dogra brothers who were members of a junior branch of the Ja mmu royal family. He entered Ranjit Singh’s service in 1812 and became a Raja in 1822. He obtained the eastern half of the Ja mmu hills as a fief and was murdered at Lahore in March 1844.
