A street-scene in the village of Raniya
- Scope & Content:
-
A street-scene in the village of Raniya. In the foreground a young woman sits spinning a child beside her, with other women around her. In the background between the houses and giant jars are cattle and camels and numerous other figures going about their business.
Inscribed on cover-sheet: ‘No. 3’, and in Persian: ‘nambar sivvam 3’ (number third 3).
315 by 418 mm.
Published: S.C. Welch, ‘India: Art and Culture 1300’-’1900’ (New York, 1985), no. 50, and Mildred Archer and Toby Falk, ‘India Revealed: the Art and Adventures of James and William Fraser 1801-35’ (London, 1989), no.72.
Note: Inscriptions on other drawings and a list in the Fraser papers refer to the village of Rauniah, or Ranneah, which is doubtless that called Raniya, now in Hissar District, Haryana. The young woman spinning in the foreground is identical with the portrait of a woman identified as Amiban, William Fraser’s ‘bibi’, and the child with her is presumably Fraser’s - see M. Archer, ‘Artists and Patrons in Residency Delhi’, in R.E. Frykenberg ed., ‘Delhi through the Ages’ (Delhi, 1986).
