Elevation of the Tower of Fame at Chitor
- Scope & Content:
-
Elevation of one side of the ‘Kirti Stambha’ or Tower of Fame on top of the Rock at Chitor.
Inscribed above in nagari in ink: ‘11 gada sri Citrakot uparki rakh babadi gaumukh upare chai Rana Kubaji ko banao kumgano samat 1505 same banao barsa 25 lag kumgano bano titi sabi lakhi sabi lakayu dasa ki likhi.’ On reverse in ink: ‘Native drawings architectural’.
Pen-and-ink; 280 by 49.5 cm, bottom section 67.3 cm wide.
Note: The Tower of Fame was erected by Rana Kumbha (1433-68) on the brow of the hill of Chitor, and seems to have been under construction for much of his reign (see ‘Architectural Survey of Western India Report 1903-04’, pp.39-41). The drawing is highly detailed but does not correspond precisely with the actual building now known. Add.Or.4313
One side of a pillar, from the temple of Sri Kalika Mata at Chitor, showing the rich carving, with a three-dimensional pencil sketch of the construction of the pillar beside it.
Pen-and-ink and pencil: 51 by 30.5 cm.
Inscribed above in nagari in ink: ‘Sri Kalikaji Mataji ra devara ki khabdasan dasa ki chaja ki chai Sri Mataji khiji mani bhuja ke chaje cheji’.
Note: The Kalika temple on the hill at Chitor was originally a Surya temple, probably of the 8th century, converted into a Goddess temple in mediaeval times when it was largely reconstructed.
