The sculpture of the ‘mahaparinirvana’ of the Buddha at Kasia.
45.5 by 66 cm.
Inscribed on a plaque over the statue: ‘This famous statue and temple of the Nirvana of the Buddha were discovered, and along with the adoining(sic) stupa, excavated, and the statue (which was found broken and scattered into numberless fragments) was entirely reconstructed, repaired and restored and the temple also repaired, and roofed by A.G. Carlleyle, Assistant Archaeological Surveyor, Archaeological Survey of India. Kusinagar, March 1877.’
