Scrapbook (ff.1-66) in cream leather covers, stamped in gold, containing pencil drawings and water-colours by various artists, some probably collected after the Hastings returned to Europe. The drawings are tipped on to buff paper, a few with inscriptions below or on the following page.

Inscribed on following page: ‘It is said that some 18 or 20 months ago, Buonaparte had a Picnic Party under the Willow Trees in the valley where he is now interred. He enjoyed it much & during their stay, said to Madame Bertrand, ‘If I die on this Island, I should like to be buried here’. A Rill of pure water trickles from the neighbouring Rock from which Napoleon had, for the above period, a daily supply.’
Note: This was probably made on a return voyage to England, but it is unclear who the artist is.

Note: The patch of yellow sky and the touches of blue in the green areas is very characteristic of the work of Sita Ram. The brushwork is slightly heavier however and the trees rather spotty. Like the previous two drawings this may be the work of Lady Hastings and may suggest she was influenced by Sita Ram.

A similar set of small size is in the V & A (IS 8 to 22-1964, Archer, ‘Company Paintings’, pp, 134-5), acquired by Lord and Lady Amherst 1824-7, but with water-marks of 1816 and 1819.

The two top drawings are inscribed on the reverse: ‘The Hermitage a Bungalow belonging to George Proctor Beauchamp Esqr. Collr. of the Pilgrim Tax at Gyah. The View is taken from the summit of the Hill on which it stands. To the left of the Picture is a large Hill called the Ramsilla. This Bungalow is fitted up in the neatest manner & tho apparently small accommodated two families besides a party of 4 young Ladies. The River Fulgo’ [Phalgu]’ with an Island in the centre on which are several Hindoo Temples is seen from the North front with the distant range of Rajegheer Hills. There is not a more lovely spot in India, C.D.’ and on the second: ‘A small cottage built by Christopher Webb Smith Esqr. about 6 miles from Gyah. It is situated on an extensive Lake & from its position was called Lymington. The tents were pitched for the party to sleep in. There is a battery mounting 8 1 pounders & 2 cutters always on the Lake & whenever the weather is fair & the wind fresh W. Smith and Mr Beauchamp Collr of the Pilgrim Tax resort here to sail. The view of the Lake & cottage from the top of the adjacent hillis beautiful’ [cf. Add.Or.4691]’. The cottage is fitted up in the English style, walls papered with French Paper, Sash windows & curtains & fireplace. C.D.’
