Original inscription: 公堂審問 (Interrogation at the magistrate's hall)
Depiction of a trial scene by the magistrate in Nanhai district, Western Guangzhou Prefecture in Guangdong Province. The magistrate sits on a horseshoe armchair behind a table, with two clerks standing at each side, one holding a pen and one pointing to the criminal. The criminal is chained with a leash around his neck, and kneeling in front of the magistrate; the leash is led by a third clerk who is also kneeling in front of the magistrate. A yamen runner stands further away, holding a long bamboo stick. On the table there are black and red brushes, ink-stone and case files, two containers of bamboo or wooden slips. On the rectangular stand on the left of the table, the district magistrate's seal is wrapped in yellow silk.
