A goddess shrine as constructed at the Durgapuja festival, with images of the goddess slaying the buffalo-demon, with other divinities.
- Scope & Content:
-
A goddess shrine as constructed at the Durgapuja festival, with images of the goddess and others. They show Durga, ten armed, all but her principal arms treated like wings behind her shoulders, but all bearing weapons. She is standing with one foot planted on her lion, the other on the shoulder of the Buffalo-demon Mahisasura, whom she transfixes with her spear and whose neck she has also caught with her snake lasso. He is green and in human form, but a buffalo head lies beneath the lion, an heraldic beast who also is biting the demon’s arm. In the shrine to her right are Laksmi with lotuses and Ganesa on his rat, and to her left Sarasvati with her vina and Karttikeya on his peacock. Offerings are placed before the shrine, whose upper portion is painted with the avatars of Visnu and the deeds of Krishna.
Inscribed below in Persian: ‘darga. mahkhasar. singha.’ On the left: ‘lachmin. ganish. cuha.’ On the right: ‘ sarasati. karttik. mor.’
‘7. Representation of Bhavany under the name and attributes of Dourga. She is represented mounted on the Singh vanquishing the Daint Mahkhasur – and she has one side of her Ganaish mounted on his rat and above him Latchemy – on the other Swam Cartuc mounted on a peacock and above him Soussutty the Daiortany of Music.’
