Matsya the Fish avatar of Visnu, who arises from the mouth of a giant vertical fish which is leaping out of the ocean, he, blue, jewelled and haloed, his four arms displaying conch, quoit, lotus and mace, the defeated demon Sankhasura below on the surface of the water emerging from a shell (‘sankha’), two Brahmins on each side standing in the water each holding up one of the Vedas. Landscape with trees, hills and spires beyond.
Inscribed below in Persian: ‘sankhasur. machh avatar.’ On folio edge in ‘nagari’: ‘15.’
