- Scope & Content:
-
Rahu, depicted as a headless but haloed dark man holding ‘khadga’ and quoit, riding a grey ram.
Inscribed in Persian below: ‘bahen bakra. rah.’
‘18. Rah, the descending node. The Daint Rah having by a trick obtained a draught of Amrut or water of immortality, he was discovered by the Sun and Moon between whom he had placed himself to escape notice, and Bishen fearing the mischief wch. might ensue from a Daint’s obtaining immortality, immediately separated his head from his trunk and appointed each a distant place in the Heavens for their station and residence, in order they might never meet, one being the ascending the other the descending node, vulgarly called the Head and the tail of the Dragon. It is therefore in consequence of this discovery, made by the Sun and Moon, of Rah’s trick, that out of revenge, when both happen to be at the same time in either or both of the nodes or houses of the Dragon, that eclipses of the Sun or Moon take place.’
