The Baha festival. (1) At the top, seven Santal villagers carrying a cloth, a pot, a winnowing fan and a basket with five fowls going in procession to the sacred grove, two of their number blowing on buffalo horns. (2) At the grove (indicated by four schematised trees), the ‘naeke’ or village priest sacrificing two fowls by cutting off their heads on the up-turned blade of a battle-axe, behind him two Santals blowing on buffalo horns. (3) Six Santal men standing in a row facing left, two of their number playing on the ‘tumdak’.’ (4) Three Santal women with sprays of sal tree blossom in their hair preparing to dance, three Santal men, one with a ‘tamak,’ the other two with ‘tumdak’s,’ dancing before them; behind the women, a Santal man holding a stick or arrow. (5) On either side, pots of rice-beer; in the middle, two seated Santal women with long hair tasting it.
