Scenes in Death’s kingdom. (1) Death, holding in one hand his book of punishments and in the other his club, sentences an evil-doer who is suspended by the hair before him by a huge demon. (2) A row of five Santals undergoing different punishments; a man ‘who drove away his parents’ has a large stone on his chest, a woman ‘who would not give fire to her neighbours’ is burnt in the red jaws of a fire placed in three small stones, a man ‘who saw straw in a neighbour’s hair but did not remove it’ has straw on his own head, a ‘mischief-maker’ is made to straddle a chair of nails, a woman ‘who stole rice’ is forced to wear a pot.
