Death's kingdom.. Artist(s): Girish Jadupatua (c.1930)
- Scope & Content:
-
Death’s kingdom. Above, a woman ‘who stole rice’ is made to wear a pot round her neck; a man ‘who saw straws in his neighbour’s hair but did not point them out’ is made to carry some on his own head; a man ‘who did not lend fire’ is made to carry a hearth on his head; a woman ‘who ate rice stealthily while husking’ has a rice-pounder hung round her neck. In the middle, a man ‘who ate a man’s flesh’ is put in a hole; a large blue demon puts out the eyes of a woman ‘who would not welcome her relatives’; a man ‘who did not return a drum’ is attached by an iron bar to two drums; a man ‘who drove out his parents’ has his arms manacled and a boulder laid on his chest; a demon beats a woman ‘who was generally bad’. At the bottom, a man ‘who borrowed money and did not pay it back’ has a tree planted in his stomach, a woman ‘who scolded her mother-in-law’ has her tongue pulled out by a demon.
Note: In each case, the evil-doer is shown nude.
