The Baha festival - three figures. Artist(s): Jitu Chitrakar (fl.1920s)
- Scope & Content:
-
Two skirted figures in brown and reddish orange, with short knob-tipped stumps as arms, standing on either side of a female figure, thinner but only slightly less tall. The left figure with black head, the right figure with brown head. Below, lotus flowers and stalks (?).
Note: For Puri paintings showing Jagannatha and his brother Balarama with similar knobtipped stumps for arms, see Add.Or.3698-3703, 3720, 3723. A version of the Jagannatha trio adapted for Santal audiences - the left figure representing Maran Buru, the centre figure Jaher Era, the right figure Sin Cando, the lotus pond (?) perhaps suggesting the great waters.
