A suppliant figure with long scarf kneeling before a four-headed, two-armed figure with massive head-dress seated on a cot. Below, two rows of eighteen severed heads - the top row dripping blood in a thin trickle, the lower row surmounting a series of yellow and reddish brown stripes (streams of blood).
Inscribed in Bengali characters: ‘atara lala’ (eighteen sons).
Note: Interpreted by the painter as Indra Daman Raja beseeching Sengel bonga to behead his eighteen sons ‘because he could not maintain them’, the streams of blood as the eighteen rivers which must be crossed in order to reach the temple of Jagannatha, Puri. According to the artist, the eighteen heads are explained by local Santals as depicting Moreko Turuiko (the Five-Six).
