Eight Vaisnava devotees engaged in kirtan chanting praise of Krishna (Hari), with musicians. A bullock about to be sacrificed. Two headless corpses, their severed heads below them.. Artist(s): Kirtan Chitrakar (fl. 1940s)
- Scope & Content:
-
Eight Vaisnava devotees engaged in ‘kirtan’ chanting praise of Krishna (Hari). In the centre a drummer with thin cylindrical drum, on either side of him a figure clashing cymbals, to the left, a figure with upraised arms, on the right, two further figures also with upraised arms. Below them two figures rolling on the ground. In the centre, a bullock walking across a double line (indicating a river), its tail held by a devotee, in front of it a second figure confronting it with an axe. At the bottom, two headless corpses, their severed heads below them.
Inscribed in Bengali characters: (1) ‘harir dhani garagari’ (at the name of Hari (Krishna) we are overwhelmed), (2) ‘baitarani par’ (crossing the Baitarani river, i.e. the river of life and death), (3) ‘papir kata jai matha’ (sinners will be beheaded).
Note: Interpreted by the painter as ‘crossing the Baitarani river after death with the help of a cow’s tail’, the figure with an axe unexplained.
