- Scope & Content:
-
Three men in a row seated before three cooking pots piled one above another. Below, a pair of men and a pair of women, one chastising the other with a ‘broom’.
Inscribed in Bengali characters, above: ‘anna kiniya khai’ (we buy rice for our food); below: ‘jhatar bari’ (to beat with a broom).
Note: The upper panel was explained by the artist as cooking food at the Jagannatha temple, Puri, and the bottom as sweepers beating sinners in Death’s kingdom. According to the artist, the three figures in the upper section are regarded by Santals as Moreko Turuiko (the FiveSix) seated and making rice-beer. At the time of collection (July 1945) the artist also possessed a scroll depicting the Santal clans and another of the Baha festival.
