Santal creation myth.. Artist(s): Madhu Chitrakar (fl.1930s)
- Scope & Content:
-
A three-headed four-armed figure standing beside a goose-like bird, approached by a royal figure with long scarf attended by a servant who holds a fan above him. Below, two birds and a crab-like creature. At the bottom to the right four Santal girls, to the left, three Santal boys.
Reproduced: M. Archer(1967), pl.76.
Note: The three-headed figure is Sengel bonga and the royal figure Indra (Daman) Raja attended by the servant Daban. As explained by Laku Citrakar, brother of the artist, the two birds are Has and Hasil (the gander and goose from whose eggs the first Santal pair were hatched). The crab is one of the water creatures who assisted Thakur Jiu at the creation of the earth (W.G. Archer(1947), 260). The Santal boys and girls are some of the original fourteen children of the first Santal pair, Pilcu Haram and Pilcu Budhi.
