The Jagannatha trio installed in majesty in a shrine with below them three priests.
- Scope & Content:
-
The Jagannatha trio installed in majesty in a shrine with below them three priests. Siva, white-skinned and wreathed with snakes, reveres them on the left, Brahma four-armed, four-headed and yellow skinned, reveres them on the right. At the bottom is the untouchables’ image of Jagannatha, situated near the Lion Gate indicated by a pair of rearing lions. To the left are subsidiary shrines and to the right, the temple bathing pool, symbolised by a fish in water. On the left-hand side above Siva are two lingam shrines and on the right-hand side above Brahma, a tiny figure of the black-skinned Krishna dancing before a black-skinned devotee. Above the central shrine is a curving band of ten figures depicting each of the ten avataras of Visnu, the place of the Buddha being occupied by Jagannatha.
In the central trio, each figure is shown as a legless post surmounted by a large head. Balabhadra on the left has a round white face, Jagannatha on the right a black shield-like face. Each has truncated wooden ‘arms’. On their extreme right, a tiny post symbolises the fourth member of the group, the Sudarsana Cakra. Bordersas is Add.Or.3662-3.
