The gods in their temple car preceded by a rider on a blue horse
- Scope & Content:
-
Similar to 3841 but substituting a blue elephant for the blue horse.
245 by 250 mm.
Note: The insertion of the blue elephant is perhaps inspired by the Asnan jatra or festival of the bath. ‘At this festival’, writes Stirling, ‘Jagannatha and his brother, after undergoing certain ablutions, assume what is called the Ganesh Bhues or form of the elephant-headed god (Ganesha), to represent which the images are dressed up with an appropriate mask. Thus arrayed they are placed on a high terrace overlooking the outer wall of the temple, surrounded by crowds of priests who fan them to drive away the flies, whilst the multitude below gaze in admiration’. The procession of temple-cars (the Rath jatra) follows some days later.
