- Scope & Content:
-
Lithograph of the main road in Lucknow in Uttar Pradesh, then capital of the Kingdom of Avadh, with noblemen on elephants passing the Husainabad Imambara by L.H. de Rudder (1807-1881) after an original drawing of January 1842 by Prince Aleksandr Mikhailovich Saltuikov and published in Paris in 1848. Imambaras were built as places to celebrate the festival of Muharram, which commemorates the three imams Ali, Hasan, and Hussein. The Husainabad Imambara or Chhota Imambara, was constructed during the reign of Nawab Muhammad Ali Shah of Avadh (r.1837-1842). The complex, consisting of a forecourt and a main court, is rectangular and can be entered through four impressive gateways on each side. The imambara is located within the main court and has a mosque on one side and a Taj-replica tomb on the other.
